Q: How can I teach in a raw, real way, how to process hard emotions and how to regulate and check in with our nervous system with my kids? (4 and 6, one has ADHD) when i struggle too?

  1. Educate yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about emotional regulation and nervous system responses.

  2. Normalize emotions: Start by normalizing emotions and helping your children understand that all emotions are valid and natural.

  3. Create a safe space for expression: Encourage your children to express their emotions openly and without judgment.

  4. Teach mindfulness and deep breathing: Introduce simple mindfulness exercises and deep breathing techniques to your children. These practices can help them become aware of their emotions and calm their nervous systems.

  5. Use age-appropriate language: Tailor your explanations to the age and understanding level of your children. Use simple language and relatable examples to explain concepts like emotions, nervous system responses, and self-regulation.

  6. Provide coping strategies: Teach your children various coping strategies they can use when they're feeling upset or overwhelmed. These strategies may include taking deep breaths, going for a walk, engaging in creative activities, listening to calming music, or talking to a trusted adult. Help them identify which strategies work best for them individually.
